About An Afternoon at the Opera: The Radio Days

For many opera lovers, their first exposure to this art form was through influential Radio Broadcasts. The long-standing commitment of the Metropolitan Opera company, in particular, played a crucial role in sparking a passion for opera in countless hearts nationwide, shaping the history of opera as we know it today.

Furthermore, exceptional programs like the Bell Telephone Hour and The Menotti Radio Hour have not only entertained but also educated. They have showcased remarkable performances by icons such as Marian Anderson, Ezio Pinza, and Helen Traubel, and focused on American operas, offering invaluable resources for vocal enthusiasts, voice students, and young conductors to witness the evolution of opera performance.

SAS is proud to celebrate these remarkable eras with An Afternoon at the Opera: The Radio Days. We are transforming our stage into a nostalgic radio studio, recreating the atmosphere of those golden days. The two-part program pays tribute to The Bell Telephone Hour and presents Gian Carlo Menotti's comic radio opera, The Old Maid and the Thief, promising an unforgettable afternoon of opera that resonates with history, comedy, and nostalgia.

Gian Carlo Menotti’s one-act opera The Old Maid and the Thief premiered on NBC Radio on April 22, 1939, and exposes the gossips and secrets of a seemingly quiet town. The middle-aged spinster Miss Todd, who spends most of her days simply knitting and gossiping with fellow spinster Miss Pinkerton, has her world turned upside-down when a beggar knocks at her door one rainy afternoon. She and her maid Laetitia quickly become smitten with the handsome wanderer and are eager to shelter him. Even when they find out that he may be an escaped convict, they turn to stealing and robbery to keep him around. Having corrupted all of her morals, Miss Todd is then devastated to discover that not only does Bob not care for her, but he and Laetitcia are ready to turn Miss Todd over to the Police for the crimes that have been committed.  A fast-paced and melodramatic opera buffa, The Old Maid and the Thief shows exactly how “the devil couldn’t do what a woman can: make a thief of an honest man!”
