About Sunday in the Park With George

Sunday in the Park with George is a Sondheim classic, written and debuted in the 1980s. This gorgeous show is split into two time periods, one in each Act. Act 1 takes place in the 1880s, following the life of the young artist known as George Seurat, and his lover Dot, as he works on his painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. It details George's dramatic, in-depth process as he works to capture all the smaller details of the world around him, as well as the romantic drama that comes with dedicating your life to work, instead of to the woman you love. Act II fast-forwards one hundred years into the future, taking place in the 1980s. George Seurat’s great-grandson (also named George) works to create a piece of art to pay homage to his great-grandfather’s work. He faces an artistic rut, and struggles to find his spot in the creative world. This story is filled with the complex ideas of love, and one’s equally complicated relationship with loss. It ventures into themes surrounding the creative process, but don’t worry, the quick-witted humor, interesting characters, and stunning music will encapsulate any audience, transporting them to a small island in France, on a hot mid-summer Sunday.
