About Rent The Musical

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, RENT is the groundbreaking rock musical by Jonathan Larson that redefined musical theatre and gave voice to a generation. Loosely inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, the show follows a group of young artists and friends struggling to survive and create in New York City’s East Village during the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis.

Set over the course of one unforgettable year, RENT explores love, loss, friendship, and the true meaning of community. Through powerful music and raw, unapologetic storytelling, the characters confront poverty, addiction, illness, and the fear of being forgotten—while fiercely celebrating life, identity, and chosen family.

At its heart, RENT asks one vital question: How do you measure a life? The answer is found not in wealth or status, but in love, connection, and authenticity. With iconic songs such as “Seasons of Love,” “La Vie Bohème,” and “Take Me or Leave Me,” the musical has become a lasting anthem of resilience, activism, and self-expression.

Thirty years after its debut, RENT remains as powerful and relevant as ever, reminding us to live boldly, love fully, and measure our lives in love.
