About The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail
Henry David Thoreau lived in interesting times. A war with Mexico. A government run by enslavers. Seemingly no way to change unjust laws. But Henry refused to support the status quo. Out of his experiences came his essay “Civil Disobedience”, which young Martin Luther King read while a college student and which inspired his philosophy of nonviolent resistance. Gandhi read it and used its tenets to gain independence for India. Tolstoy read it and used its tactics to fight for rights for serfs in Russia. What will you take from Henry's example?
