About The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn
Composed by Joseph Haydn and first performed in 1798, The Creation (Die Schöpfung) is one of the great masterworks of the choral repertoire. Inspired by the biblical story of Genesis, as well as passages from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, the oratorio tells the story of the world’s formation through vivid musical storytelling, dramatic choruses, and radiant solos. Haydn’s score paints light emerging from darkness, animals filling the earth, and humanity entering paradise with remarkable imagination and joy.
From the awe-inspiring opening depiction of chaos to the triumphant choruses celebrating creation, the work stands as a monument of the Classical era and a profound expression of wonder, gratitude, and faith.
