About The Sound of Music

Valley Theatre Company is proud to present this year's summer musical theatre hit, "The Sound of Music" with 8 shows performing from July 3rd - 12th at the Morgan Performing Arts Center (400 E. First Ave).

Synopsis:

Get ready to experience the heartwarming story and unforgettable music of THE SOUND OF MUSIC as Valley Theatre Company brings this timeless classic to the stage. Featuring iconic songs such as "Do-Re-Mi," "My Favorite Things," and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," this beloved musical will captivate audiences of all ages.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC tells the story of Maria, a young woman who leaves an Austrian convent to become the governess to the seven children of Captain von Trapp, a widowed naval officer. Through her warmth, music, and unwavering spirit, Maria brings joy and love back into the family's lives, all while navigating the looming threat of Nazi Germany.  Patrick Nolan, the show’s Director notes that “This musical is inspired by real people and events, and while audiences may have fallen in love with the movie, the musical is even more impactful, with songs and scenes that are unique to it that more fully tell the original story.”

The talented cast features Alyssa Gregor in the role of the spirited Maria, and Jonathan Leonard as the stern but loving Captain Von Trapp. Adding her musical expertise, Elise Rhodes serves as the Music Director and also embodies the iconic role of Mother Abbess. We are also excited to feature a full 18-piece orchestra to accompany the performers, conducted by Andrew Spencer.

Community theatre is a family affair, and we love having multi-generations involved in our production. It has been 24 years since Valley Theatre Company last performed The Sound of Music, and for several participants this show has come full circle. David Connolly, this year’s Assistant Director, played Kurt 24 years ago. Carole Rhodes and Jessica Hudson are also making a reappearance after two decades, and Jessica’s two daughters have joined her for this year’s production. Jonathan Leonard’s own daughter Trinity is playing his daughter Marta in the play; and sisters Olivia and Michelle Snow are making daily treks from Yakima to play Louisa and Gretel.
