Donald Steven Olson
Playwright DONALD STEVEN OLSON is delighted to be working with Transformation Theatre on his second play honoring the life of transgender pioneer Christine Jorgensen. His first, TRANSFORMATION – The Christine Jorgensen Show, is a musical about Christine’s debut as a nightclub entertainer in 1953. Donald wrote the book, songs, and lyrics for TRANSFORMATION, which had its first reading/performance at the prestigious National Arts Club in New York in March 2022. Donald has enjoyed an international career as a playwright, novelist, and travel and garden writer. His plays have been seen in New York, London, Rome, Amsterdam, and Portland, Oregon. Oscar & Walt, about the 1882 meeting of gay literary lions Oscar Wilde and Walt Whitman, won the 2019 “Best Full-Length Play” award from ALAP/City of West Hollywood Pride Reading Festival. It received its world premiere in Rome, followed by a staged reading at The National Arts Club in New York, and a critically acclaimed production with the Kinetic Theatre Company in Pittsburgh in 2021. An all-star reading of Oscar & Walt kicked off the 2020 New Works Virtual Festival to benefit the Actors Fund and is available on Youtube. London-based Lume Books recently reissued E-book editions of three of Donald’s groundbreaking LGBTQ-centric novels: The Confessions of Aubrey Beardsley, about the 19th-century English artist Aubrey Beardsley; The Secrets of Mabel Eastlake, a gay/trans thriller set in Hollywood in the 1930s and 1980s; and Queer Corners, about the violent anti-gay rights battles fought in Oregon in the 1990s. He is also the author of The Gravedigger’s Daughter, a collection of gay ghost stories, and the internationally published rom-com My Three Husbands, penned under the name Swan Adamson. Over the years, Donald has written dozens of guidebooks to destinations in Europe and North America, and published two acclaimed garden-tour guides, The Pacific Northwest Garden Tour and The California Garden Tour, both illustrated with his photographs. www.donaldstevenolson.com
