Director's Notes ( )
When I read the script for The Book of Will, I knew I needed to tell this story. The entire piece reads like a love letter to Shakespeare, theatre, and stories in general. As a lover of all three of those things, I felt a special connection to the script. Sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking, it gives us a look at the lives of people who knew and loved the Bard. We’ve seen the plays, read the sonnets, and seen his portraits, but the words are all we get to experience of him. Gunderson’s play imagines what it must have been like for The King’s Men and their families, dealing with the loss of such a great man. She shows us the pain of mourning, but also the beauty of love, friendship, and hope. It’s these ideas and emotions that drive John Heminges and Henry Condell to publish the plays written by their dear friend, Will. Did they know they, themselves, would be the subject of a play hundreds of years in the future? Highly unlikely. Did they know that teenagers would sit together in rooms filled with tables and desks, reading Romeo and Juliet aloud as their English teacher explained the colorful jokes hidden in a swordfight? Doubtful. While we can’t know exactly what went through their minds, we can imagine they wanted to ensure that the words of a talented playwright, one of their dearest friends, were made available to anyone who wanted to read them. Thankfully, because a few people wanted to honor and remember someone they knew and loved, we get to sit in this theatre together and hear Will’s words today. And tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.
