Production Notes

The Search for Anno Domini MMXXI-I-VI by Peter Ukpokodu, is a surreal, short play set symbolically in a dream/nightmare that takes place in a fictional Texas park over a few hours on a fall afternoon.

In this quiet park, a group of friends and few strangers seeking peace, gather to enjoy a peaceful afternoon. As they drift into a collective dream, the serene environment morphs into a chaotic and threatening nightmare, mirroring the unpredictable horrors of January 6, 2021. The characters confront their deepest fears and traumas, grappling with a violent insurrectionist whose views mirror those who stormed the U.S. Capitol. This play weaves together personal narratives and historical events, offering a powerful commentary on the enduring struggle for justice and equality in America. The choice to employ gender inclusive casting is a deliberate one which asks the audience to suspend their belief of so-called traditional gender norms to allow for a nuanced and representative portrayal of the characters' experiences.

This casting choice underscores the importance of visibility and representation in a Covid world, that is bookended by racial division and political discord that is challenging American democracy daily. The Search for Anno Domini MMXXI-I-VI asks us to consider that we are all essential workers for democracy as it addresses urgent issues of diversity and the resilience of the human spirit. We invite the audience to witness and reflect on the transformative power of theater in challenging societal norms and advocating for a more inclusive world.
