About Winter Break

Winter Break was born in the pandemic. Its first incarnation was filmed and streamed. This collection of mostly two-person scenes makes it ideal for covid times. But virulent virus-suitability considerations aside, I was also charmed by it when I read it this past summer. “Sweet play,” I thought, putting it on my list of shows I might direct someday. When the joyous openness of June and July gave way to the darkness of the fall, it rose to the surface. The interactions of the high school students are amusing but also poignant. Without being too “heavy,” the play touches on serious life issues that teenage students (and many adults in slightly different ways) struggle through. But there is also a strong current of connection, mystery, and hope. The range of personalities and topics provide not only a surprising panoply of scenarios for the audience to enjoy but also a wonderful breadth of opportunity for a variety of actors. It felt like a perfect fit for this time. Come along with us on the journey the characters take through a wintry afternoon near Christmastide and remember with nostalgia the years gone by. Share with them the relief of release and the longing for care and community we hope to find this holiday season.
