About Once Upon a Mattress

Once Upon a Mattress is a musical comedy adaptation of the 1835 Hans Christian Andersen fairytale “The Princess and the Pea”. The show features music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer. Originally opening on Broadway in 1959, Once Upon A Mattress introduced the world to the comedic talents of Carol Burnett. She was nominated for a Tony Award for the performance and secured a role on The Gary Moore Show which, after a couple of years and an Emmy award, opened the door for The Carol Burnett Show, one of the most popular television variety shows of all time. The 1959 Broadway production was nominated for a Tony for Best Musical and spawned a national tour that boasted Buster Keaton as King Sextimus the Silent. The show has had two Broadway revivals, one in 1997 with Sarah Jessica Parker as Winnifred and one currently showing on Broadway with Sutton Foster as Winnifred.

Grant Performing Arts is happy to produce this show this year with an extremely talented cast, listed below.
