“I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise” Ballet Solo (Anika Thomas)
This is a selection from the “Who Cares Ballet” which used seventeen pieces by the famous jazz composer George Gershwin and was choreographed by the influential New York choreographer George Balanchine. This jazz ballet was made to evoke the life and hustle of New York City and is a tribute to Gershwin, American music, and the driven American spirit. Danced by Anika Thomas, original Balanchine choreography taught by Erin Buterbaugh. Anika Thomas is glad to be performing alongside her CUP family again in this Patriotic showcase. She first debuted on the CUP stage in 2010 as an orphan in Annie and has participated in 20 shows in Pagosa between CUP and PSHS since. Currently, she is studying Music Education and Dance at Colorado Christian University and looks forward to bringing the joy of the performing arts to the next generation. Anika also loves making music with her family and is enjoying participating in this musical alongside her mom and three younger siblings. In her non-existent spare time, Anika likes to dance ballet, go backpacking, fly fish, camp, teach swim lessons, play any instrument she can get her hands on, and find ways to give back to the Pagosa community that she loves.
