The Plot Creative

Director's Note
plot (noun):
1) A specific area marked for a purpose, such as building or burial.
2) A secret plan, often to do something shameful or illegal.
3) The events of a story.
Playwright Will Eno surely had all three definitions in mind when he crafted this play. The first definition may seem clear even before we begin. The second definition may shock you. As for the third, you’d best expect a twisty tale marked by big feelings and some laughter.
Will Eno is a modern existentialist forever examining the meaning and purpose of life through a slightly distorted lens. Known for writing dialogue we don’t expect, he creates characters who often fail to filter their remarks. They’re fully human and recognizable, nonetheless, because they speak aloud what many of us feel or think.
Having directed both a staged reading and a full production of another Eno play, I was excited to take on this script. His signature emotional swings may unsettle an audience, yet Eno’s genius is to suddenly draw you back in and (almost) break your heart. He also loves a good puzzle.
Working on this script at Black Swamp Players with this cast and crew has been a gift. Thank you for being here to share it.
