About Eurydice

The Myth:

The myth of Orpheus and Eurydice details Orpheus, son of Apollo and the muse of epic poetry Calliope, and his wife Eurydice, a nymph. Orpheus is one of many greek heroes that was known for being incredibly talented in music. In the myth, Eurydice dies after being bit by a snake while being pursued by the shepherd Aristaeus for her beauty. After her death, Orpheus was determined to bring his wife back to the land of the living. He journeyed to the underworld where he met the god of death and ruler of the underworld, Hades. Hades wanted to take Eurydice as his own wife and made a wager with Orpheus. If he could sing a song to make him cry, he’d let Orpheus take Eurydice back. So he did and his voice sounded so sad, even the most stone-hearted Gods would feel pity for him. Hades cried and let Orpheus take back Eurydice on one condition. He had to leave the underworld without looking at her. When they nearly reached the end of their journey, Eurydice cried out for Orpheus causing him to turn around. And Eurydice was gone forever.

Our Production:

Sarah Ruhl’s interpretation of this myth is from the unseen perspective of Eurydice in a much more modern setting.  Ruhl uses the myth as a backdrop to show Eurydice's journey of love for not only Orpheus but also her father despite losing her memory and her own desires. We ask ourselves what would we do for love? Would we travel to hell and back? But what happens with the love we forget about? Does it remain lost in the overgrowth? These are but some of the key concepts we aim to explore within this beautiful abstract piece.
