The Performing Arts At The St. Paul's Schools

At The St. Paul’s Schools, we begin our theatre curriculum in the fourth grade, immersing students in preparation for our Fourth-Grade musical as actors, dancers, singers, lighting and sound designers, and producers. We offer a full 5–12th grade curriculum in theatre, including musical theatre, comedy styles, and physical theatre. As a capstone of our program, there are IB and other advanced opportunities for students to select, produce, and direct their own mainstage productions in our 320 seat Ward Center Theater, as well as two blackbox venues.

Students in the upper school can study all aspects of technical theatre including lighting and sound design, set design and construction. All theatre students can apply their knowledge as actors, producers, members of stage crew, or as lighting and sound engineers in our many campus productions. These include a 5th & 6th grade drama or musical, 7th & 8th grade production, upper school musical, winter drama, or the IB show.

Through a comprehensive curriculum, as well as supplemental study through the extracurricular program at The Dance Conservatory (TDC) at The St. Paul’s Schools, students experience the artistry of many cultures. Courses focus on technical achievement, fitness, and the opportunity to perform in a minimum of two full-scale dance productions each school year as well as an additional concert in TDC. The genres explored in our curricular program (open to SPSG students in grades 5–12 and SP students in grades 9–12) include Ballet, Tap, Modern, Contemporary, and Jazz, as well as a class that is specifically designed with our athletes in mind: Dance for the Athlete. Our most advanced ensemble, Inertia, has filmed site-specific movies at the Maryland Center for History and Culture, The Baltimore Museum of Industry, and Ladew Topiary Gardens. They have appeared at national conventions, met with renowned ballet dancer Misty Copeland and other notable artists, and maintain a highly visible and active performance schedule throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond.

We look forward to welcoming you to our exciting productions this year at The St. Paul's Schools!
