About Shrek The Musical Jr.

This isn't your typical SHREK. It's unlike anything you've ever seen on film or on the stage.

Here at Unlabeled, we believe in unified theatre performances. Why does the world insist on separate programming and institutions based on abilities and disabilities? Unlabeled is here to change that standard by casting shows with two people in almost every role. One artist - who has a cognitive and/or physical disability or is neurodivergent - is paired with a neurotypical artist. Together, they create their role and performance. Every partnership is different and unique.

When my partner in theatrical crime, Lisa Hanson, suggested that SHREK be our inaugural production, and our Executive Director, Chris Moquist, concurred, I agreed. However, I knew I didn't want this version to look or feel like any of the popular takes. This is a modern, current retelling of a contemporary classic.

Let go of what you think you know about these characters and the messages imparted by the Broadway show or Dreamworks film. Instead, enter our world, if only for a short time, and imagine….how do you get through life when the world insists on calling you a “freak?” With a dark and glorious sense of humor!

Before I conclude, I want to express my deepest, heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the people and organizations who stepped forward as our first group of supporters, sponsors and volunteers: Josh Barnd & River Bottom Productions, Jordan Buckellew, Beverly Claflin, Hellmuth & Johnson PLLC, MNprov, Ann Morrison, the Northwestern College Theatre Department & the Northwestern College NEXT Program, James Rocco, Rubin Cordaro Design, Lindsey Smith, EVERYONE at St. Peter's Church in Edina, and True North Equity Partners. Finally, a very special thanks to our board members: Daron Dolynchuk, Peter Espinosa, Michele Landis, and Eric Molho.

Cheers,
