The Rocky Horror Picture Show Creative
DIRECTOR’S NOTE
I was 14 when I first discovered the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Back then, we loved it because it was obscene, shocking, and weird. We were weird. This fit us. 20 years later I’ve found myself loving this show, whether the movie or the musical, not because it’s weird or obscene - but because once I’d discovered its true meaning, I knew I needed to spend my life chasing its message. Self-love. Accepting who you are. Loving who you are - unabashedly. This is the theme that not only makes this film beloved by the LGBTQA community, but one that all of us should rally behind. Don’t dream it, BE it.
Meatloaf, a former CT resident, passed away last year of Covid-19 complications. He iconized the role of Eddie - despite his initial resistance to being in the film at all - so a shoutout to Meatloaf. Tim Curry suffered a stroke a few years ago, which breaks my heart. He has given SO MUCH to a community struggling with their identities. The confidence to be who we are. He came out to say: “Look at me. Not only is this OKAY, it’s FABULOUS.” Thank you, Tim Curry.
I could thank all of the other actors in the film, or Richard O’Brien, the mastermind behind it all - but I really want to thank MY actors. Every single person in this cast went above and beyond for this show. Helping with set, lights, costume, props - you name it. They were so fantastic to work with and they made this show the most enjoyable show I’ve ever worked on. It has been a BLAST. Every single person you see on stage is just incredible - there are no words to describe how lucky I feel to have this exact cast and no other. To my cast: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I love you.
This is my directorial debut (in the US) and certainly my debut to a show of this scale. It’s been a wild ride, but incredibly rewarding. Thank you for coming out to see it, I hope it adds a valuable memory to your Halloween weekend. If you’ve read this to the end, you’re probably my boyfriend, my sister or my parents. Whoever you are - give yourself over to absolute pleasure. And don’t dream it. Be it.
