About Almost, Maine

Theatre is either/or the mirror of the lamp of life.

As the world struggles to find its way out of a pandemic, this small slice of life known as Titan Theatre is finding its way out as well. Yet, we are not struggling. When this year began, I had many questions - the most important - would the kids return to the numbers we had when the world shut down? On September 9th, the answer was a resounding yes. Almost 50 students showed up for the interest meeting. The next day, 22 actors arrived for auditions and 15 techies arrived to work the show. The next Monday, 10 actors and 2 techies showed up for the one act competition piece. And, the next day, 20 improv artists showed up for Blankslate, our improvisation team.

The questions were answered, They came back eager to continue the work we had started 4 years ago when I took over the program.

This is why the production of Almost Maine is so appropriate. This play examines the complexities of love, the sudden feeling of attraction, the search for “the one” - to be found, the struggle to stay in love, the need to feel the pain of love, the many ways we discover we are in love.

I originally chose this play because it could be produced with as few as four actors or as many as 19. I had no idea what to expect when we returned. But now I know this show came into my life to represent the complexities of theatre - so similar to love. We fall in love with the play, the lines, the characters. We search for “the one” way to play each character, each scene, the play in its entirety. We struggle to stay fresh in a scene we’ve run 20 times. We feel the pain as we struggle to learn our lines, finish the set, set the lights, run the show. In the end, we discover that we are, indeed, in love.

All theatre is a labor of love, and each production feels like the biggest labor of love. But each of us on this stage and behind the scenes were impacted by the pandemic, and in this space, we are healing. While the production that never saw an audience, Singin’ in the Rain will forever represent the pain of loss for those of us who worked on that production, this production, Almost Maine, will forever represent the joy that comes from survival.

I hope you are in love. I hope you love the show. I hope you find or have found, “the one”.

Oh, and if you thought making it rain on stage was hard, you should have seen us making the Northern Lights work.
