“Don’t bother to tarry in America, go straight to Butte,” was the call of many Irish immigrants to their relatives back home — and Butte answered. By 1900, more than 12,000 residents of Irish descent called the Mining City home, giving Butte one of the highest percentages of Irish population in America.

Dublin Gulch carries on that proud tradition.

Now more than twenty-five years strong, Dublin Gulch has been led for nearly three decades by Butte native Tom Powers, whose commanding vocals and deep knowledge of Irish song anchor the group’s sound. Joining him is Mick Cavanaugh, the “Tin Whistle Wonder of Walkerville,” a multi-instrumentalist who brings banjo, mandolin, whistle, guitar, and vocals to the mix.

Jim Schulz adds guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, banjo, bones, and both lead and harmony vocals — claiming just enough Irish lineage to justify the repertoire. Fiddler and banjoist John Joyner rounds out the core sound with a lively blend of Celtic, bluegrass, jazz, and old-time traditions.

New members Conor Powers on percussion and Luke Michelson on bass and violin bring fresh energy to the group’s already dynamic presence.

Dublin Gulch has been featured on The Midnight Special (WFMT Chicago), Penn State’s The Folk Show, NPR’s Here & Now, and Thistle & Shamrock — and continues to celebrate the deep Irish roots of Butte through song and story.

Come celebrate St. Urho’s Day with an evening of music that honors Butte’s rich Irish heritage.

Advance tickets are recommended.
