About Her Own Sweet Voice

James Funston's play is inspired by the abolitionist sermons and writings of Rev. Thomas Wentworth Higginson delivered from the U.U. pulpit on Pleasant Street, Newburyport on the eve of the U.S. Civil War. Although outlawed in 1781, slavery persisted long after. The play features the quest for freedom by a woman named Mutala who lives a life of involuntary servitude in a High Street mansion in Newburyport. As the church celebrates its 300th anniversary, this play highlight's the church's history as a beacon of light against oppression.
