About Full Moon Story Slam - Games People Play

Storytellers and audiences are enjoying The Actors Studio of Newburyport’s (TASN) fifth season of true-life stories told without notes or props on themes ranging from synchronicity to pronouns. TASN’s Full Moon Story Slam is modeled after NPR’s Moth Radio Hour. It is a story telling competition with a few simple criteria for both the official judges and the audience to vote for their favorites.

The Full Moon Story Slam has been a consistently popular event since its inception, so much so that, during Covid restrictions, it expanded nationwide as a Zoom event.

The Slam is our chance to gather as friends and share true stories from our lives. Simply put, a story slam is a competition based on the art of storytelling. It puts a dual emphasis on content and performance, encouraging storytellers to focus on what they’re saying and how they’re saying it. It is an exercise in crafting stories within a set time limit – and it is great entertainment! Story slammers will tell a 5-minute short story based on the evening’s theme: GAMES PEOPLE PLAY
Criteria for judging:

  • The story has an arc: a beginning, a point of change, and a resolution.
  • Presentation of the story.
  • Time (no longer than five minutes, but no shorter than four minutes).
  • Connection to the theme.

Please remember, the story must be true. The story must be yours. And you may not use props, notes or a written script.

If you know that you would like to tell a story, you can let us know by email  [email protected] up until noon on April 20, 2023 by noontime, If you are not yet sure, you will have the opportunity to sign up during the event.  Storytellers need to purchase tickets.
