About Anon(ymous)

Begin in the middle.
On the border.
On the crossing.
Begin in the place in between.

In her play Anon(ymous), Naomi Izuka retells Homer’s Odyssey in a contemporary landscape.  She reimagines the hero as the refugee Anon who was separated from his mother on the crossing to a new country.  The story begins “In the place in-between” – in the midst of an epic journey.  Anon, torn between two places, struggles to find his mother, to find himself, to find home. Izuka’s metaphor for the experience of many refugees reminds us of the struggle, the loss, and the strength, of those compelled to leave home in search of a safer place.
