About A Midsummer Night's Dream
Believed to have been written between 1594 and 1596, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays. It is set across two worlds – the royal court of Athens and a mystical forest that lies beyond the city’s walls. The iconic comedy explores themes of love, friendship, jealousy, and magic.
In the days leading up to the wedding of Duke Theseus of Athens and his Amazonian bride, Hippolyta, four star-crossed lovers must sort out their own romantic destinies. To avoid parental and royal decrees that threaten to keep them apart, one couple escapes into the nearby woods with another in pursuit. In another part of Athens, a group of artisans – or ‘mechanicals’ – are rehearsing a play to be performed at Theseus’ and Hippolyta’s nuptials. The actors are earnest if not very skilful, and they, too, make plans to rendezvous in the same wood. The wood is, in fact, a magical realm ruled by Oberon and Titania, the King and Queen of the Fairies. Tensions are high among the enchanted creatures, however, and when the lovers and mechanicals collide with these magical beings, the results are Classic Shakespearean Comedy.
