About The Wizard of Oz
Southern Brings ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to Life
“Follow the Yellow Brick Road” to Southern WV Community & Technical College’s Savas Kostas Performing Arts Center on the Logan campus for a classic musical that will take you and your family on an “Over the Rainbow” adventure!
L. Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz” will bring Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion, the Munchkins, and other colorful characters to life as they bargain with the Wizard and contend with the menacing Wicked Witch of the West.
Featuring music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y Harburg, the musical is based on the classic 1939 film, which itself was based on Frank Baum's book. “The Wizard of Oz has left an indelible impression on over four generations,” Director Bill France said. ”It has grown into something that lies at the very heart of what we feel about courage and homecoming.”
“With its stunning visual elements, glorious music, and the unabashed vulnerability of its cast of characters – be they lions, wizards, or men of tin – it fulfills the evergreen role of a true classic,” France said. “The great thing about directing this show is it responds equally well to the imagination of theatre-making as to the wonderful technicolor of film."
Southern WV Community & Technical College will present “The Wizard of Oz” this summer in the Savas Kostas Performing Arts Center. This is the full-stage version based on the classic 1939 film. Show dates are Thursday, July 11th at 7 pm, Friday, July 12th, Saturday, July 13th at 7 pm, Thursday, July 18th, Friday, July 19th, and Saturday, July 20th at 7 pm, and Sunday, July 21st at 3 pm.
