About Tichina Vaughn and Friends Celebrate Martin Luther King Day

Join us in honoring MLK Day through inspiring music and community spirit. Your participation fosters a sense of pride and collective purpose. SAS Performing Arts Company is proud to work in conjunction with the LC Vaughn Sankofa Memorial Arts Fund to present this extraordinary event. We have assembled an array of performers who have collectively appeared at some of the world's greatest opera houses. Singers scheduled to perform with Tichina Vaughn include: Sopranos: Monica Camafreita, Lynnesha Crump, Melissa Joseph, Kimberly Lloyd, and Kyaunnee Richardson. Mezzo Sopranos Daveda Browne and Lara Michole Tillotson, Tenor: Chauncey Packer, Baritones: Phillip Bullock, Eric Greene, and Antonio Watts, and Bass-Baritone Virdell Williams.
We are excited to present two New York City premieres by exciting young African American Composer Jerrell Gray entitled “The Soul Of American” and “I, Elizabeth Freeman”. This performance will showcase the incredible talents of both emerging artists and established professionals, who have performed all over the world, and will present selections from Opera, Art Songs, American Musical Theater, and Spirituals. Throughout 2026, we will showcase wonderful American emerging artists in complete Acts of favorite operas, including Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Gounod's Faust, Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, and Verdi’s Rigoletto and La Traviata. This is a great way to introduce opera to first-time opera goers. Later in the year, enjoy the sharp wit of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest now set in New York City's Gilded Age, and in honor of America's 250th birthday, we present Thornton Wilder's poignant slice of Americana, "Our Town," scheduled for June 2026. With such a diverse array of performances, there is something for everyone!

The SAS Annual Vocal Competition is quickly becoming a top event for young singers. Over the past six years, our winners have performed with leading companies like the Paris Opera, Washington Concert Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera.
