Into the Woods is a 1986 musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine.

The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Rapunzel”," Cinderella", and several others. The musical is tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family (the original beginning of the Grimm Brothers' "Rapunzel"), their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them and encounters with other storybook characters during their journey.

Excelsior Arts Academy and Youth Theater began as a vision brought to life by an inspired advisory committee in the summer of 2018. By Fall 2018, that vision officially blossomed into a creative powerhouse with a dedicated 7-member Board of Directors, an Executive Director, Director of Vocal Music, and Director of Drama leading the charge. From the beginning, our mission has been clear: to empower young voices and nurture the transformative magic of the performing arts.

​With a focus on youth ages 8–22, we also proudly extend our reach to all-ages productions, ensuring inclusivity and community spirit. In December 2018, Excelsior premiered its first production, A Christmas Carol, at the Auburn Methodist Church—a testament to the heartfelt storytelling that has become our hallmark. Since then, we've expanded our repertoire and impact, creating opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and connection.

​Our official status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization underscores our commitment to providing accessible and enriching experiences for all. Through workshops, classes, and inspiring performances, we strive to instill confidence, resilience, and a lifelong love for the arts in every participant.
