About The Addams Family
A word from the Director
ICON (noun) Latin origin.... Meaning: an important and endur-
ing symbol.... Used in a sentence: Charles Addams created an icon- a work that registers as an emotional and cultural reference in the minds of millions. In 1938 two unnamed characters and an old Victorian house ap-
peared as a cartoon drawing in the New Yorker Magazine. The artist, Charles Addams, was encouraged by the New Yorker’s
founder, to “continue with more characters in the delicious house.” Thus the Addams Family was born. Since then the Addams Family has been “reincarnated” many times over. From 1964-1966 one could turn on their television set and see the Addams Family for 30 minutes as they culture clashed with the rest of the world. Under the impression that their macabre tastes are shared by most of society they are constantly puzzled by the horrified reactions of others to their good-natured and “normal” behavior.
After this short lived T.V. series came two Addams Family films, a Saturday morning cartoon series, video games, a remake of the original T.V cast - in color, a Fester Electro Shock arcade cabinet, the best selling pinball game ever, and now a Broadway Show! As the curtain opens tonight on our Addams Family, I doubt there will be a person in the audience that does not snap their fingers to the iconic Addams Family theme song....”a cultural reference in the minds of millions!”
