Two newly married Venetian gondoliers discover that one of them is the rightful king of the far-off land of Barataria, who was already wed in infancy to another.

But which one? Gilbert and Sullivan's sunniest collaboration blends mistaken identities and tangled webs of amorous conflict with glorious music, dance and comedic moments creating an a boisterous and joyful show as the mystery is revealed.

Two newly married Venetian gondoliers discover that one of them is the rightful of the far-off island of Barataria and who was wed unknowingly in infancy to a an equally unaware bride from the Plaza Toro family in Spain. But which gondolier is the king? Set in 1750, Venice Italy, W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s sunniest collaboration blends tangled webs of amorous conflict with glorious music, dance and comedy creating a boisterous and joyful show as the mystery of the true king is finally revealed. The show themes “Love to Live and Live to Love” and “Take Life As It Comes” will surely bring a smile and lift the spirits.

The musical is under the direction of Ms. Melodie Dickerson, Chair of Performing Arts Department and features a cast of 19 SCF students along with 9 SCF Music Theatre alumni accompanied by an Orchestra of 13 SCF student and faculty musicians led by Mr. Rex Willis with Choreography by Ms. Kelly Burnette, SCF Adjunct Instructor of Dance.

SCF Neel Performing Arts Center

Since 1966, the SCF Neel Performing Arts Center has served as a cultural center for Manatee and Sarasota counties hosting both College and community-sponsored events. The main performance hall remodeled in 1999 features a 65 x 40 foot stage, seating for 830 patrons, as well as wheelchair accessible seating and restrooms. The magnificent Elizabeth M. Eaton Memorial Pipe Organ, a 50-rank, 3-manual instrument built by master craftsman Charles McManis, was rededicated in October 2000.
