About Brighton Beach Memoirs

Brighton Beach Memoirs, a Tony Award and New York Drama Desk winning comedy, is the first of a trilogy of Neil Simon “semi-autobiographical” plays. First produced in 1982, it tells the coming-of-age story of Eugene Morris Jerome, a Jewish teenager from a Polish immigrant family trying to get by in depression era Brooklyn. According to Simon, the play tells its story "through the eyes of a 15-year-old boy who is writing his memoirs - which is what I did when I was 15." This play explores adult themes and is recommended for mature audiences.
