About Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind

Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind is an experimental theater piece created by the Neo-Futurists. It’s not a traditional play but a fast-paced, interactive performance in which actors attempt to perform 30 short plays in 60 minutes.

Each play varies in style—some are comedic, some dramatic, and others absurd or thought-provoking. The order is determined by audience participation: the audience shouts out numbers corresponding to the titles of the mini-plays, which are posted on a clothesline or a board. This means each performance is unique, as the sequence and selection of plays change every night.

The show embraces randomness, direct audience engagement, and a mix of scripted and improvised elements, all in line with the Neo-Futurist philosophy of honesty in performance. It’s known for being energetic, unpredictable, and emotionally dynamic.

Mainstage Center for the Arts

Mainstage Center for the Arts fosters a vibrant, nurturing environment where youth and adults use the performing arts for personal expression and growth, enhancing the quality of life in South Jersey.

We envision a future where:

  • Creative expression is integral to education.
  • The performing arts unite and inspire our community.
  • Everyone can engage with the arts as participants, audiences, or professionals.
  • Mainstage is a premier hub for artistic programs and services.

Founded in 1989 by Edward P. Fiscella, Jr., Mainstage began as a summer theater program at Glen Landing Middle School. Its success led to year-round programming, incorporation as a nonprofit in 1994, and a rebrand in 1997. Without a dedicated theater, we formed partnerships to provide arts education and performances across the region.

Today, Mainstage serves over 50,000 people annually, directly reaching 1,200 children through classes and workshops. Recognized as one of South Jersey’s top performing arts centers, we are supported by grants, sponsorships, and contributions, with major backing from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
