About Jive For Five! From Bach to Rock! Brass Quintet

The Jive For Five! From Bach to Rock! Brass Quintet is a distinguished Iowa-based brass ensemble made up of five veteran music educators and performers who have dedicated their careers to enriching music education and performance across the state. With decades of combined teaching and performing experience, the quintet delivers polished, engaging programs that span classical masterworks, patriotic favorites, jazz standards, Broadway selections, marches, and popular music.
Their repertoire of more than 300 selections includes works from composers and styles ranging from Bach and Mozart to the Beatles, Duke Ellington, Karl King, Sousa, and more — reflecting both technical mastery and vibrant entertainment for audiences of all ages.
The ensemble includes Tim Miller and David Swaroff on trumpets, Kathy Yoakam on French horn, Dan Cassady on trombone, and Paul Bloomquist on tuba. All five members are proud performers with the Karl L. King Municipal Band, one of Iowa’s most historic and respected community bands.
🎶 Tim Miller – Trumpet
Tim Miller is a retired instrumental music educator who taught for over 40 years, including more than three decades with Humboldt Community Schools. He remains an active performer throughout Iowa, playing with regional ensembles such as Lone Tree Revival and the 515 Big Band. His experience as both educator and performer brings brilliance, leadership, and precision to the quintet’s trumpet section.
🎶 David Swaroff – Trumpet
David Swaroff dedicated 40 years to music education before retiring, teaching in Iowa school districts and directing successful band programs. He continues to perform in community ensembles, including symphony performances across the region. His depth of experience, strong musicianship, and refined tone add versatility and balance to the quintet’s trumpet sound.
🎶 Kathy Yoakam – French Horn
Kathy Yoakam served for many years as a band director in the Humboldt Community School District, where she inspired and mentored generations of young musicians. She remains active as a performer and community musician. Her rich horn tone and steady artistry provide the essential inner voice and warmth that anchor the quintet’s overall sound.
🎶 Dan Cassady – Trombone
Dan Cassady is a highly respected trombonist, educator, and clinician. Since 2025, he has served as director of the Karl L. King Municipal Band. Dan also performs with the Dick Bauman Monday Night Big Band in Okoboji, the Jazzed Up Big Band in Arnolds Park and has taught at the Reggie Schive Summer Jazz Camps since 1985. His leadership and passion for jazz education continue to influence musicians throughout Iowa.

Together, the members of Jive For Five! From Bach to Rock! Brass Quintet represent more than two centuries of combined experience in music education and performance. Their shared commitment to excellence, community engagement, and lifelong music-making continues to inspire audiences throughout Iowa.
Janice K. Lund Performing Arts Center
Once merely a parking lot, the new Janice K. Lund Performing Arts Center cuts a stunning silhouette across the skyline, boasting lovely architecture melded with artistic functionality that will host generations of entertainment.
In 2016, a bond approved by the residents of the five counties served by Iowa Lakes Community College, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Kossuth, and Palo Alto, helped fund the Janice K. Lund Performing Arts Center.
The completion of this major construction project has reinvigorated music and performing arts on the Estherville Campus of Iowa Lakes Community College and in the local community.

500-SEAT THEATRE
The centerpiece of the Janice K. Lund Performing Arts Center is a 500-seat theater with an open mezzanine that accommodates up to 105 people for a seated meal, or more for standing cocktails or intermission snacks. The performing arts center also includes a box office and area for concessions.
“The line of sight from the seats to the stage is incredible. There are no bad seats in the house! We are beyond excited for the Janice K. Lund Performing Arts Center to open, so we can begin sharing concerts, musicals, state-wide events, and more in a place with permanent sound and lighting.”
Carol Ayres-Stueven, Former Instrumental Music Professor

BACKSTAGE, COSTUMES, LIGHTING & SOUND
Backstage, instead of the standard green room, Iowa Lakes opted to create a blue-note space for performers and speakers to await their cues and to host small private events. Additionally, a new costume area provides plenty of space to sew, launder, and store costumes. The theater also incorporates a state-of-the art theatrical rigging system and an advanced lighting and sound system.
