Carol Triffle and Jerry Mouawad, the creators of Imago, have been called alchemists, magicians, theatrical animators, and physical comedians.

Defying classification, they have populated the stage with characters and beings such as comedic amphibians, acrobatic larvae, circus boulders, and metamorphosing humans in works which tantalize the senses, the intellect, and the passions. From adaptations of classics to excursions into vaudevillian existentialism, Imago's repertoire is as vast as the forms they shape. With commissions for stage, film, and television, Imago blurs the lines of the expected to break new ground, exploding performance boundaries yet maintaining humor and humanity.

Imago Theatre tours internationally while also producing a season at its home base in Portland, Oregon. The company's critically-acclaimed productions FROGZ and ZooZoo have played at the prestigious New Victory Theatre in NYC's Broadway district.

Imago Theatre's mission is to create theatre that transcends the limits associated with language, age and even gravity and other laws of the real world. The company has a proven track record of entertaining multicultural and multigenerational audiences with its inventively mind-bending productions. While the company’s approach has long been grounded in physical phenomena and fundamentals of the teachings of the late Jacques Lecoq, Imago has developed a distinctly theatrical approach all its own. Productions blend dance, design, clown, music, text, and illusion. Style, form and content continually evolve to explore ontological, philosophical or absurd elements of life, being and existence.

Another important element of Imago’s mission is to maintain and expand our facility as a cultural center for Portland’s dance, music and theatre companies who are in need of our valuable venue as a performance space. The Imago building provides the community with an affordable inner-city venue that offers full technical support and rates that are well below the higher-end city and commercial venues.
