OVERVIEW
EAST OF THE SUN AND WEST OF THE MOON is a Norwegian Fairy Tale. It was included by
Andrew Lang in “The Blue Fairy Book” from 1889. Published in 72 books and presented in video
format in 1991. The story has been rewritten as a musical; with music by Larry Evans, and book and
lyrics by Kai Cofer. Cast of seven; four female and three male, all adults. The script is 70 pages
long with 28 original songs by Larry Evans. An hour and a half long with a 15-minute intermission, performed in a 78-seat theater with six performances over 2 weekends. Piano accompaniment with string bass, drums, and flute.
SYNOPSIS
A white bear approaches a poor peasant and asks if he will give him his prettiest and youngest
daughter; in return, the bear will make the man rich. The girl is reluctant, so the peasant asks the
bear to return, and in the meantime, persuades her to marry the bear. The bear turns out to be a
handsome prince.
The daughter disobeys the bear and the evil queen casts a spell on the prince. She must then
embark on a journey to rescue the prince from the evil queen. A fairytale for the whole family.
