A sweltering courthouse holds the attention of the small town of Hillsboro, where Bertram Cates stands on trial for teaching Charles Darwin in his science classroom. Matthew Harrison Brady, a larger than life political candidate, stands as attorney accusing Bertram Cates of indoctrinating the youth of Hillsboro away from the teachings of the Holy Bible. Henry Drummond stands as attorney for the defense while E.K. Hornbeck, an outspoken critic from Baltimore takes notes on the small town justice delivered by the good people of Hillsboro.
