Director's Note

There is something to be said about the power of a happy group of theater kids. That power has inspired me to direct my 5th show, the one you are probably about to see or have seen recently, Newsies, Jr. A year ago, I didn’t know anything about Newsies, but I was pretty sure it was a musical about newsboys who danced a lot. Now I know that it is, in fact, a musical about news-children who dance a lot. Its reputation for being a “dance-heavy” show was actually what drew me to the show in the first place. That, and recommendations from several students who are now in the show and are thrilled that I took their suggestion. One thing about me is that I LOVE a big dance number, and after slowly increasing the amount and level of dancing over the course of my previous four shows, I felt ready to take on some big dance numbers of my own. From the beginning I was looking forward to the choreography process, starting with adding a dance section to our auditions this year. For some reason that evades me now, I didn’t realize how much the cast would enjoy the process alongside me. I would show them an idea I had for the choreography for a specific line or part of a song and they would perform it the way I showed them, no matter how awkward or choppy it may have felt. And then they kept enjoying the process when I changed that choreography several times because it was awkward and choppy.

It has been a joy watching these kids work together to make this show come to life. Over the last few weeks especially I have seen them support each other both during and outside of rehearsal in a way that makes me smile just thinking about it. I am so grateful for all of the positive memories I now have with the show and the amazing cast and crew that have brought my vision to life.

Huge thanks to Ms. Sum, Mrs. Molina, Ms. DeSimone, Ms. Dougan, Mrs. Parsons, and Mrs. Baldermann for helping me throughout the process and for being so supportive. Thank you to my tech theater class for the amazing sets and props they made. Thank you to all of the teachers who have moved around or given up their space. It means more than you know! And finally, thank you to the families of the cast and crew for giving me so much time with your kids and for all of the support and grace you’ve given me.

I hope you all enjoy the show! Let us seize the day!
