About the Work:
Xiang Xu's "Nocturne" is performed by the students in the Temple Dance Ensemble. In this shadowy world of unknowns, the dancers feel the tension between separation and unity. They search for individual identity in the midst of a large and swirling group.
Merián Soto will show "Decolagem", an exploration of preparing for flight. The piece features Maria Teresa Olmadillo playing live viola while dancing.
Jillian Harris and Marie Brown present the completed work, "Prim and Proper". They embody various female stereotypes while pushing back against expectations. Resistance to the pressure seeps and sometimes explodes out of them as they struggle to find some way forward.
Laura Katz Rizzo's new work in process "Interference is Coherence", studies three coherent waveforms interacting with each other. The dancers investigate the phenomenon of diffraction as a source of iridescence and chaotic brilliance.
Guest artist Fairul Zahid visited Philadelphia from LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. Over two weeks, he worked intensively with the Temple Dance Ensemble students to create the new piece, "Anthropoidal". Dancers navigate the fine line between human and non-human in an exciting rush of movement.

The Dance Department at Temple University is committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship and artistic practice. Understanding that we experience life through our bodies, our programs encourage students to consider how minds in motion contribute to knowledge, transform the social world, and facilitate community engagement.
A founding member of the National Association of Schools of Dance, Boyer's Dance Department has provided a multi-layered creative, reflective, and inclusive dance learning environment for over fifty years. We continue to honor traditions while exploring new ways of knowing dance.
