Meet our Clinician

Dr. Shawn Royer (she/her) is the Chair of the Music Department and an Assistant Professor of Music at Marian University in Indianapolis where she also directs the Jazz Band. She earned her PhD in Music Education with a minor in Jazz Pedagogy from the IU Jacobs School of Music in 2022. Dr. Royer is a Yamaha Performing Artist, Vandoren Artist Clinician, and professional jazz musician on saxophone, clarinet, and flute. Before teaching at Marian University, Dr. Royer held adjunct and associate teaching positions at the Butler University School of Music, the IU Jacobs School of Music, and at IUPUI. In 2022, Dr. Royer guest directed the IJEA All-District Jazz Band and was the featured guest artist for the Bloomington Jazz Festival. This year, she co-presented “How to Better Support LGBTQ Youth in Music Classrooms” at the IMEA conference with her wife, Sarah Royer. In addition to her work in academia, Dr. Royer directs the Swing Shift Indy Big Band, the 65th Street Klezmorim, and the SYO Summer Music Programs (syogi.org), a non-profit organization she founded that provides unique music opportunities to youth throughout Indianapolis and its surrounding areas. Dr. Royer plays Yamaha clarinets and saxophones exclusively.
