About FLYIN' WEST

Flyin’ West by Pearl Cleage is a richly layered and deeply moving drama that brings to life a rarely told chapter of American history—the migration of formerly enslaved Black women to the western frontier in search of freedom, ownership, and self-determination.

Set in 1898 in the all-Black settlement of Nicodemus, Kansas, the play centers on four women who have forged a life together on their own terms. Sophie Washington, the eldest, is a fierce and determined leader who has claimed land and independence in a world that has historically denied both to women like her. Her younger sister, Fannie, is educated and idealistic, holding tightly to visions of a future shaped by dignity and possibility. Their sister Minnie arrives from the South with her husband, Frank, carrying both hope and hidden pain. Completing the household is Miss Leah, an elder whose lived experience of enslavement serves as both a warning and a grounding force for the younger women.

Together, these women have built more than a home—they have created a sanctuary. But that sanctuary is threatened when Frank’s presence introduces tension, control, and danger into their carefully constructed world. As truths emerge, the women are forced to confront not only the external forces that seek to limit them, but also the internal struggles of trust, loyalty, and survival.
