The Curious Savage

The Curious Savage is a comedy by John Patrick about an elderly widow, Mrs. Savage, who inherits $10 million from her husband. The play is set in the 1950s and follows Mrs. Savage's decision to hide the money from her stepchildren and give it to others. However, her stepchildren commit her to a sanatorium called The Cloisters, where she finds her true family. The play compares the kindness and loyalty of psychiatric patients with the greed and hostility of "normal people". It also questions conventional definitions of sanity and celebrity culture.
