As with most theaters during this time of COVID, BHS Drama is facing a challenging year. Most classes will be virtual as well as rehearsals. Live performances will likely be live-streamed. We are working to find solutions to be able to have some form of live performances, but when faced with the challenges of ensuring safety for cast members and audience members, the steps that must be taken to sanitize all costumes, audience seats, mics, props, sets, etc is overwhelming and expensive. Most of the funds that the program receives is through their live performances, which could be very minimal this season.

Buchholz High School Theater has a full 2020-2021 season planned which includes:

The War of the Worlds, old time radio performance (October 2020)

Pandemic Connections (November 2020)

Holiday Snowcase (December 2020)

Student One Acts (February 2021)

Marian, or the True Tale of Robin Hood (March 2021)

BRKLYN, The musical (May 2021)

Buchholz High School Drama program is led by Ted Lewis who has taught his students for the past 20+ years. He encourages his students to face challenging material that addresses social issues relevant to their experiences. In their 2019-2020 season, they performed Columbinus which looks at issues of alienation, hostility and social pressure in high schools. This performance won All Star Acting Awards for 2 of our students and a Best Ensemble award for the entire cast when presented Florida Theater Conference and All StarTech and an All Star Actor award when performed at the Thespian Districts competition. Past performances included the first high school production or Evil Dead, which was one of a few schools invited to perform at the Thespian States Main-stage Competition. Subsequently BHS Thespians brought Night of the Living Dead to the Main-stage as well.

Buchholz Drama typically presents 3- 4 productions each year. Each show has 100 or more students participate as actors, directors, set designers, lighting and sound designers, choreographers, stage techs, ushers and concessionaires. There are 130 students currently enrolled in theater classes at Buchholz High School. The Drama Program started soon after Buchholz High School opened in 1971. There are over 40 of Ted's graduates working professionally in theater, as Broadway and off-Broadway producers, Broadway performers, performers on cruise ships and theme parks, working in lighting, sound, pyro-technics. Nine of Ted's graduates are teaching theater in high schools and universities.
