About Little Shop of Horrors

A deviously delicious Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical, Little Shop Of Horrors has devoured the hearts of theatre-goers for over 30 years. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney's The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast, and Aladdin) are the creative geniuses behind what has become one of the most popular shows in the world. The meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names "Audrey II" - after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it, BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II's out of this world origins and intent towards global domination! This version of the wildly produced classic features the original libretto we all know and love paired with the 2003 Broadway orchestrations.

Director's Note

Whenever I advertise this show to high schoolers who have never seen it, I find it to be a hard sell. A man-eating plant from outer space?! I just keep hoping it sounds weird enough for someone just to want to see what it's all about. But Little Shop of Horrors is more than just a weird sci-fi horror movie. It's a story of short-sightedness, of moral dilemma, and of ignoring warning signs until it's too late. Perhaps you can relate to Seymour pursuing his passion for exotic plants in spite of increasing danger and finding himself too deep in his own career to escape. Maybe you can relate to Audrey whose own self-worth has led her from one abusive partner to the next, unequipped to find her way out. Seymour and Audrey, seemingly from different worlds, find themselves so controlled by those they've let bully them that it's only in finding each other that they find out what a healthy relationship can look like, and only with this newfound sense of self do they release themselves from their controllers. The circumstances are absurd, but the message is concrete. We hope you can enjoy the balance of real and surreal in our interpretation of this cult classic favorite.
