The theatre department at ALCS provides opportunities for middle school and high school students to participate in and learn about various aspects of theatre. Students are taught that each performance is an opportunity to bring characters to life, share a story with the audience, inspire and entertain the audience, and ultimately to do their very best and give glory to God.
The Abundant Life Christian School Theatre Department is constantly seeking out new opportunities for students to engage in the arts, gain valuable experience, and expand their capabilities and talent. Throughout the school year, students can take part in theatre classes, workshops, scene readings, trips to local theatrical performances, and technical training sessions. In addition to helping students gain specific skills in theater, these activities help students to grow in confidence, communication, and teamwork.
Each fall, students can participate in a small production. Past fall productions have included: full-length plays, one-act plays, shortened Shakespeare plays, and Theatre for Change* productions written by students. Fall productions are often in connection with theatre classes on directing or production design, which allows upperclassmen to take on production staff roles. In the spring, middle and high school students (and occasionally elementary students) can audition for a large musical production. Past productions include: The Sound of Music, Godspell, Hello Dolly, The Music Man, Annie, Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof, Cinderella, Mary Poppins, and Newsies.
*Theatre for Change takes place every few years in the fall and is in connection with the Theatre for Change high school theatre class, which provides an opportunity for students to choose a social issue, research it, and write and put up their own production on the topic. Past Theatre for Change productions have brought awareness to topics such as Sex Trafficking and The Affects of Social Media on Teens.
