About Hamlet

Come to the JBHS production of Hamlet, set in the context of 1971! Experience the classic work of Shakespeare transported into Vietnam-War-era America. Protests against the war, political rise of college students, controversial corporations, and government corruption ruled the time. Hamlet, freshly graduated from UC Berkeley, returns to his family’s summer home in the Hamptons. With funerals, weddings, and murders galore, Hamlet’s family struggles to hold on to their corporate monopoly. Watch the chaos ensue in our interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet—Playing November 18, 19, 20 2022.

John Burroughs High School Drama Department

Since 2008, the John Burroughs High School Dramatic Association has made incredible strides in expanding its theatre program and won numerous awards. The number of classes has more than doubled, student enrollment is at an all time high, and the audience turnout at shows continues to grow. The drama room we call home had a new blackbox theatre installed, and we also have a new sewing room as well as two storage containers for our sets and props. We collaborate with our incredible tech theatre students on our productions, as well as our instrumental and vocal music programs, our photography teacher and students, our woodshop teacher and students, and many more.

JBHS Drama produces three mainstage productions a year, two scene showcases in its classroom blackbox theatre, and competes in many drama festivals and competitions.
