About She Kills Monsters

She Kills Monsters  Virtual Realms by Qui Nguyen is HHS Playhouse's Spring 2021 Student-Directed Spring Show!

A statement from the director, HHS senior Mia Altamuro

This past year has been a lot of things, none of which positive, but above all it has been a year of loss. Some of us have lost our jobs, some of us have lost loved ones to the coronavirus; maybe we’ve lost a store or restaurant we used to go to before it went out of business due to lockdowns. All of us have lost time, memories that could’ve been made, and a year of our lives. We’ve never seen and we never will be able to see what could’ve happened in an alternate universe, but we still feel the absence.

She Kills Monsters is another show which, although on the surface is a quirky, comedic show about a fictitious adventure, is a show that deals with the concept of loss. It follows a young woman named Agnes who loses her younger sister Tilly to a car crash; a sister she never
really knew or related to. For many of us, we had treated our normal lives the same way; we never thought that all of the things we’ve taken for granted, such as going to school or a concert or just any place in public, could all disappear. Only now did we realize how much we’ve taken things for granted.

The reason why I think this is an important show to do at this time, is the core message which I hope gets through to everyone who watches it, which is what we do with loss. Agnes, through her journey in the D&D world, as she learns more about the sister she lost and herself, she also learns what to do with that loss; to hold on to what she does have, and to move forward, making the most out of life as it comes to her. She learns that life is a collection of stories, and those stories are what bring us together and make us whole.
