About Freshly Rooted: With Michael Oatman

One play per hour starting at 6 p.m. Freshly Rooted is a "new works" series that includes a staged reading of new works to engage with audiences and introduce community members to brave new voices, telling stories in innovative and bold new ways. The series includes an interactive feedback session after the last show on April 1st. Pour it Out encourages the audience to share its thoughts of the play, actors and the performance making the audience part of the creative process. Additionally, the segment includes professional playwrights who will also share their feedback. One ticket will gain you access to all of the play readings!

For this installment, it highlights four plays and playwright, Michael Oatman, former Playwright-In-Residence at Karamu Theater, the oldest African American theater in the country. The four plays that will be stage-read include:

“The Slap”: In the wake of the Will Smith/ Chris Rock Oscar slap incident - Jada Pinkett Smith flashes back to the rocky origin of her marriage which was born out of a love triangle between her, Will Smith and Tupac Shakur.

“Not a Uterus in Sight”: A female college professor is arrested by a Black FBI agent after giving an incendiary speech at an abortion protest that leads to the death of a police officer.

“The Benediction”: A shadowy bad man pays a visit to a troubled pastor in search of a crucial piece of information.

“Far From a Distant Shore”: Albert Einstein, WEB DuBois, and Paul Robeson meet at Einstein’s home to settle old scores and work on the 1946 Anti-lynching petition.

The in-person performance on April 1st will be followed by Pour It Out, a feedback session including Véronique George, Dr. James Webb and Bryan-Keyth Wilson. Pour It Out will be available live via streaming on Brevo Theatre’s Facebook Live and Zoom. Click the link HERE to sign up for the virtual livestream of “Pour It Out”.

Brévo Theatre

Currently a resident theatre company at The Little Haiti Cultural Center, Brévo Theatre is an incorporated 501(c)(3), created by Zaylin Yates and his business partner, Terrence Pride during their time as students at Florida A&M University. One of the productions they are most proud of incorporated a highly successful and student-funded dinner theater performance of "Kissing the Blarney Stone," which paved the way for the duo to continue to produce shows that challenge modern-day theater while showcasing and developing local talent in unconventional performances. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Brévo Theatre produced a series of virtual dance videos that interpreted acts of racial injustice, entitled "Protest Art," commissioned by the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. Most recently, Brévo Theatre produced "American Son,"  the Broadway play by Christopher Demos-Brown. The Brévo-produced rendition was sponsored by Miami Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, and included a live and in-person conversation with well-known playwright and Miami native, Mr. Demos-Brown entitled "2 Shades of Black: An Exploration of Biracial Identity.” Brévo Theatre’s mission is to provide a platform to the unheard by highlighting up-and-coming playwrights, actors, dancers and directors, by offering a diverse entertainment experience through color-blind casting.
